Tom

TOM had friends who had taken lovers, who had swapped wives, who had taken advantage of the proximity professors have to young, eager girls, but Tom had never been interested in making a mess of things for a few small, extramarital pleasures. He didn’t think it was worth it. He wanted what he had now: a comfortable, familiar marriage; an earthbound challenge that stimulated a dormant part of his brain; and a driveway that did not need to be shoveled. He realized that he had no idea anymore what Lily wanted. She had wanted to move. She had pushed for it. Why was she so suddenly unhinged?

When Tom got back to the house, he went immediately to the deck to see if Lily was still there, and if she was okay. He picked up the bottle of zinfandel, which still had a glass left in it, then set it down, and walked toward the bedroom. Lily was curled into a ball under the covers, her arms tucked under her body like fine-boned wings. She was a small woman who looked even smaller when she was asleep. The accusation she had made seemed to be hovering around her, like a tangible thing, thick and black. He stood over the bed for a while, watching, as Lily slept and Luna curled up on the carpet by the door. He was so sweaty and hot, he couldn’t imagine climbing into bed. He walked out back to the deck, lay down on a lounge, finished off the wine, and after studying the stars, closed his eyes and fell asleep.
